Surface Mount Technology
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) refers to a technology for establishing an electrical connection between components and the conductive pattern, in which the component connections are only connected on the surface of the circuit board. No drill holes, as with Through-Hole Technology, are required.
The connection is usually established by soldering with lead free or leaded tin. By surface mounting, SMT components (SMD components) can be assembled on both sides of a printed circuit board. Components can even be assembled exactly opposite to each other. A mixed assembly of SMT and THT is possible as well.
The professional application (placement) of SMD components can be ordered from an EMS service provider. The corresponding service is SMD placement (SMT placement or SMT Assembly).
